Moisture control is one of the quiet disciplines behind reliable SMT assembly. Many ICs, LEDs, sensors, modules, and advanced packages can absorb moisture during storage or handling. If that moisture expands rapidly during reflow, the result can be package damage, delamination, electrical failure, or hidden reliability risk.

1) Understand what MSL is trying to prevent

Moisture Sensitivity Level, or MSL, describes how sensitive a package is to moisture exposure before reflow. It does not mean every exposed component will fail. It means production must control exposure time, storage environment, and baking decisions so parts enter reflow within a safe process condition.

2) Treat floor life as a production-control item

Once a moisture barrier bag is opened, floor-life tracking starts for moisture-sensitive parts. The practical question is simple: can the material be assembled and reflowed within the allowed window? If not, the team must plan dry storage, resealing, or baking before the risk becomes urgent.

3) Baking is useful, but not free

Baking can restore safe condition for certain materials, but it can also affect labels, reels, trays, solderability, or production schedule if handled poorly. Baking decisions should follow component documentation and supplier instructions. Do not treat baking as a casual reset button for all parts.

4) Build dry storage into the material flow

  • Keep moisture-sensitive reels and trays sealed until production is ready.
  • Record open time and reseal time where required.
  • Use dry cabinets or controlled storage for exposed sensitive parts.
  • Communicate partial reel usage and leftover material status after production.

5) Connect MSL control with scheduling

A last-minute line delay can turn a compliant material plan into an exposure problem. Good scheduling keeps sensitive material release aligned with actual SMT loading. For high-risk packages, material control, production planning, and process engineering should share the same status view.
